About the Study

This is a research study conducted at the University of Minnesota that aims to develop a new intervention that may help young people with depression. This new intervention combines two techniques designed to enhance healthy brain functioning:

Mindful Breathing involves focusing all of one’s attention on the experience of breathing for a period of time.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a noninvasive brain stimulation procedure in which electrodes are placed on the scalp and a small amount of energy is delivered for the purpose of stimulating the brain. This procedure is done while the person is awake.

Who can enroll?

Young people 16-22 years old with current depression symptoms

Study Activities

This is a 9-week study. Some of the study activities take place at the University of Minnesota, and some take place at home. Activities include:

  • Clinical Assessment
  • Brain measurements
    • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
    • Electroencephalography (EEG)
  • Heart rhythm measurement: Electrocardiography (ECG)
  • Mindful Breathing Training
    • At home
    • At the University of Minnesota
  • Combined tDCS with mindful breathing sessions

Compensation

Participants will receive compensation for some of the visits in the study. Parking costs will be covered.
